Home science is a field of study with its mission to empower individual, family and community for effective role performance and management of resources to improve the quality of life. It primarily emerged out of the felt need for a comprehensive type of training for girls in the context of changes in the socio-economic environment as well as the changes in the family system and functions. Home science was conceptualized basically as an interdisciplinary applied area of study built upon the basic and social scientific knowledge. There are five major areas, viz., Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Family Resource Management, Child Development and Family Relations and Home Science Extension Education. It is the only professional study with the nucleus of the family as a social and economic institution. Although, the philosophy of home science was more family oriented and is even increasingly so, the home science has now broadened its philosophy to relate the nucleus of family to the national educational policies and national economy.

The College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara had its origin in the Assam Veterinary College established in l948 at Nagaon with a three year diploma course in the line of veterinary colleges elsewhere in the country. In 1958, the college was granted affiliation to Gauhati University and started the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & A.H.) degree programme. The College was shifted to the premises of the Directorate of the Veterinary Science, Government of Assam at Chenikuthi, Guwahati in l950. Later in l960, the college was shifted to its present location at Khanapara, Guwahati. With the establishment of Assam Agricultural University on 1st April, 1969, the Assam Veterinary College along with its physical facilities and manpower was transferred to the university and was renamed as College of Veterinary Science under the Faculty of Veterinary Science.

The Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science was established at Azad, Lakhimpur in 1988. The first batch of 20 (twenty) students were admitted in February, 1988. However, due to inadequate infrastructure in the college for quality education, the students admitted in this college during 1996 and 1997 started their classes in the College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara. After creating some facilities, admission to the college was again resumed from 1998 with 20 students in each batch. However, from the session, 2000-01, only Ist year class of 20 students are taught here and they are sent from the 2nd year class to the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara for onward study in view of the fact that facility has not yet been created adequately for quality education to keep up the standard of veterinary education in the university. A total of 114 students have passed out from this college till date.

In early part of the seventh decade of the last century the elite of Tingkhong strongly felt for a higher educational institution within the vast region of Tingkhong Assembly Constituency. Foreword Keeping in view the urgent requirement of a college in the greater areas of Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts covering Sepon, Moran, Khowang, Lengeri, Tingkhong, Mahmora, Khalaighogora, Bakata and Nitaipukhuri Mouza, a public representative meeting was called on 1st December 1963 under the aegis of Moran Development Committee to give a sincere thought for the establishment of Moran College. As a result, the long cherished dream of the economically poor but great aspirant of higher education became a reality when 68 students (60 boys and 8 girls) were enrolled on 27th July 1964. Initially the classes were held at Moran Girls’ High School Building from 6.30 A.M. to 9.00 A.M. and the ‘Assam Chah Mazdur Sangha’, Moran Branch allowed the college authority to utilize its office for the Teachers’ Common Room and Library cum office from the day of its inception, besides providing monetary support. These types of generosity have assumed greater significance in inspiring and enlightening the sentiments of those people attached to it.
